5 Things You Can Learn From an Engine Diagnostic

We've all experienced starting a car only to see an illuminated check engine light. As your Mazda dealer, we will conduct an engine diagnostic when this happens to determine the cause so we can get you back on the road in no time. Read more below about this important car maintenance test and what you can learn from it. 5 Things You Can Learn From an Engine Diagnostic at Your Mazda Dealer Overall Engine Health A healthy engine is essential for a car to function optimally. Running a diagnostic test for your engine is a computerized process that shows how all of your engine's parts are working, and it can be performed at any time to determine the overall engine health and as a preventative measure to detect minor problems before they become bigger issues. Oil Quality and Level Your car's engine needs a steady supply of clean oil to keep its parts lubricated. Completely running out of oil will result in a seizing engine, and dirty oil can build up on parts of the engine and affect how well they function. The diagnostic test for your engine will sense both the quality and the amount of oil in your engine and determine if the oil needs to be changed or replenished. Compression Engines work due to an internal combustion process that converts gas into motion. Part of how that combustion occurs is through the compression of fuel and air. A diagnostic test will show how well the fuel or air gets compressed. If there is inadequate compression, the combustion cycle will not work, and the car won't run or start properly. Your Fuel Economy and Emissions Certain parts of the car's engine, collectively called the emission control system, are vital for efficient fuel economy and safe emissions standards. For example, damaged oxygen sensors or catalytic converters will affect the safety and efficiency of your car in the long run if not addressed. A diagnostic will locate any issues with these parts so we can ensure you pass future emissions tests and so your car will run as efficiently as possible. If Parts Are Aging or Broken Although many engine issues can be fixed simply without any exchange of parts, sometimes pieces age or break down. A diagnostic tells us precisely where a problem is and what specific piece of the engine is affected. That way, we can determine whether the part needs fixing or replacement. The older your car is, the more likely some pieces are wearing down over time. Now that you have our list of what you can learn from a car diagnostic, we hope you know how important it is to stay knowledgeable about your car's engine health. Call Mazda City of Orange Park today to schedule a diagnostic test!

Does Your Mazda Need Brake Service?

Your braking system, like any other mechanical system, needs to be serviced regularly. Parts can wear out, lubrication can dry up, and the system can start to fail. As your Mazda dealer in Jacksonville, FL, we provide full service for your brakes. We'd like to tell you about some of the signs that you're due for a brake service. Signs You Need a Brake Service at Your Mazda Dealer Your Brakes Screech Screeching brakes are a sign that your brake pads have worn down. The brake pads fit into the brake calipers. When you hit the brakes, hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid forces the calipers to clamp against your wheel rotors. The friction generated by this will bring your Mazda to a stop. To generate extra friction, your brake pads are covered with friction material. This material slowly wears down as you use your brakes. The material covering is 1/2" thick, and will gradually degrade until it needs to be replaced. When your pads are 1/4" thick, a metal spike becomes visible. The next time you use your brakes, this spike will scratch against the wheel rotors. The resulting screeching sound means that it's time to change your pads. Grinding Noises If the pads aren't replaced when they start screeching, they'll continue to wear out. Once the friction covering has worn off, the bare metal of the brake pads will strike the rotors when you brake. The metal brake pads will scour the wheel rotors, and this can lead to serious damage. The wheel rotors need to be smooth and flat to provide the best service for your brakes to work. When you hear grinding noises, the surface of your rotors is being damaged. You must bring your car to our service department ASAP. Our technicians will replace your pads and assess the level of damage to the rotors. Serious damage to the rotors may require that the rotors be resurfaced or even replaced. Severely damaged rotors can also crack or break. Your Brakes Are Soft Soft brakes provide little or no resistance when you step on the pedal. Normally, you'll feel resistance from the brake fluid in the system when you put your foot on the pedal. The lack of resistance is potentially dangerous, as it shows that your braking system doesn't have the pressure necessary for your brakes to operate effectively. Low pressure in the braking system is usually caused by a fluid leak. Leaking brake fluid will gradually reduce the pressure and reduce your braking capability. Our technicians will find the leak and repair it. Once the damage is repaired, we'll refill your brake fluid. If your brakes need a service, call us today at Mazda City of Orange Park.
