Your transmission is critical for the operation of your vehicle. However, it is also prone to problems at times, and rapid repairs are required to prevent extremely expensive repairs down the road. 4 Signs Your Mazda May Be Having Transmission Problems and Needs Service at Your Local Mazda Dealer

1. Your Gear Shifting Is Erratic

One of the most common signs you are having trouble with your transmission is erratic gear shifting. Erratic gear shifting is often an indication that your transmission control unit (TCU) is damaged if you are driving a Mazda with an automatic transmission.

If you are driving a Mazda with a manual transmission, it is possible you are only having a problem with your clutch. However, it is still very important that you have your vehicle diagnosed and serviced right away.

2. Something Smells Odd

If you smell something sickeningly sweet, you need to come in for a transmission repair right away. Your transmission system is closed by design, and transmission fluid smells sweet. Therefore, if you smell something sweet, particularly when entering and exiting your vehicle, your transmission fluid is leaking and the transmission system needs to be repaired.

If you can smell transmission fluid, check under your vehicle to see if there is a pool of transmission fluid under your vehicle. If you see a red, pink, or brown puddle, check the transmission fluid reservoir to see how much fluid is left. If there isn’t enough fluid in the reservoir, you should not drive your vehicle until the reservoir is topped up. Driving with an insufficient transmission fluid level can cause your transmission to overheat and cause excess wear and tear.

3. Something Sounds Odd

Odd sounds are another common indication that something is wrong with your transmission. Specifically, you probably have a loose or broken transmission mount if you hear knocking sounds when you change speeds quickly or change gears.

4. Your Transmission Slips

If your transmission slips gears regularly when you drive, there is definitely something wrong with your transmission system. If you come in for a repair in a timely manner, you may only have a gear missing a tooth or two.

Replacing a couple of gear teeth is a simple fix. However, you should not put off this very important repair. The longer you go without fixing your problem, the more serious your problem will become. For example, you may find that you need to replace an entire gear.

There are many signs you may be having trouble with your transmission, including erratic gear shifting, odd smells, and odd sounds. If you have experienced any of the aforementioned signs of transmission trouble, you need to bring your vehicle in for service right away.
